Removing Lube

Postby trek988 » Thu Jun 06, 2013 12:12 am

I got a deal on some bullet casting equipment. I've never had an interest in bullet casting but I couldn't pass this up for the price. A part of this deal was some already cast bullets, that are already lubed. I don't want to use them and would rather melt them down and cast them into other calibers. I put a couple in the melt pot and with the amount of smoke and scum that it created I realized that wasn't a good idea.
What would be the best way to remove the lube so I can melt these down?

Been up the same mountain trek988. I guess it would depend on what type of lube it is. If it is hard like the lube that many cast bullet providers use so they can dump a bunch of bullets into a box and not worry about it getting smeared all over the other bullets you could use mineral spirits as it dissolves paraffin readily. I don't know how it would work with bee's wax. Another thing you could do is use them as your fluxing agent and ignite the fumes over the pot to cut down on the smoke. I use old candles myself but I have also used lubed bullets such as you have. Works fine.

There is a bunch of bottles of the Lee lube, I'm guessing its that. I have an ultra sonic cleaner, maybe I'll give that a try.
Thanks for the reply's.

no, just cook em in the pot outside and make new ingots. It will smoke off.
