Lee Auto Drum Powder Measure update

Postby Horseman » Mon Sep 21, 2015 6:55 pm

Okay, I've had this measure for a few days now and the more I've used it the less enamored I am with it. It's starting to leak a bit with finer powders like H335 and H110. Not a lot, but enough that it annoys me. I ordered a new elastomer wiper for it just in case that's the problem. (?). Also It seems to wander a bit more than I like (or expected) with powder drops. Again not a lot, but more than I would like it to. For instance, today I was checking H335 for my AR and set the measure for 25gr. Got from 24.7 (one) to 25.1. Now that ain't real bad but the Pro Auto disc was a consistant 24.9 when I was using it. So I'm revising my earlier "glowing" report to a now I'm not sure it's such a hot item after all report. I'm going to have to see some improvement before I put it on one of my presses and trust it without checking every powder charge. That would kinda defeat the purpose of a progressive or turret press to me.

The reviews over on Castboolits are, for the most part, quite good now. Might give them a read for the tips they are using.

Ordered a couple new elastomer wipers from Lee (free) and installed one in the Auto Drum measure. That cured the leaking problem and it's back to throwing charges within a tenth or so (depending on powder) and no leaking. Also when I disassembled the measure after use there was no powder left in the housing. So the wiper was the culprit after all. Not sure why the original was bad but everything seems to be good to go now. I'm a happy camper....again.... 8)

I received the Auto Drum PM and the additional set of Quick Change Drums from Titan Reloading. I washed all the parts with TSP and blow dried them with a DataVac. No prepping with graphite was done, but the hopper was rubbed down with a used drier sheet. Before starting each set of measurement with each new drum and powder the unit was cycled with that powder 10 times. (Fine tuning the grains measurement took place during these cycling's) The Lee powder thru expander die or the Lee rifle powder dies were used. I had no leaking of any powder tested. I felt the activating and reset of the measure was smooth on my progressive.
