Cleanest brass?

Postby THRASH » Wed Aug 13, 2014 8:41 pm

After reviewing the brass prep scene (tumble, vibrate, ultrasonic) seems the best way is a rotary tumbler with stainless pins? Any experience with this would be appreciated. I have about 1500 .40 S&W cases to prep, so plan to pin-tumble, de-prime & size, and then pin-tumble again to clean the primer pockets. Is this a good plan?

I use a Lee universal de-capping die and remove the primers before I use the SS Pins. Primer pockets come out real nice. A little dish soap, some lemmi-shine and hot water. Works every time.

I was thinking not to run the dirty brass through the uni-decap, would really gum things up, right. Tumble the brass, then de-prime and then tumble again to clean the primer pockets?

I was saying you should NEVER run dirty brass through the decap die, or any die, unless you want to ruin the die. Thus, I plan to pin-tumble my brass twice, before and after decapping, so the stainless pins will clean the primer pockets. Am I missing something here? Thanks.

There's no way to hurt the Lee Universal de-priming Die. By and large the only thing that touches is the pin.

True. And if the tension is set properly, even trying to deprime a Berdan case won't do any harm because the pin will just back out. (Don't ask me how I know this.)

I have no shame I have pushed the pin out of my depriming dies a few times, glad they are like that, and not the bend then snap kind, hehe

Not understanding this, uni-deprime also sizes, so not just pushing the primer out, we are also sizing, shaping and nixing bulge? What the heck? There should be clean brass for resizing, otherwise the die will gunk up.

The universal decaping die as far as I know deprimes multiple caliber cases, but does not resize caliber specific brass. I may be wrong on this.

Lee Universal Decapping Die just deprimes. Only caliber specific resizing dies decap and resize

Yeah, as it turns out I've never seen the uni-decap, all my dies are caliper specific, and station one is sizing-decap. Thought the Universal part meant the combo of recap & sizing, my bad. Going to have to get one of those and do sizing at station 2. Thanks ...
