LM Setup Procedure when switching bullet sizes? (9mm)

Postby Frodo9mm » Fri Dec 09, 2016 6:36 pm

What is the best way to setup the LM when switching bullet sizes?

I am seeing unacceptable case bulge.

I just went from 9mm 115 Berries Copper to 147 Berries Copper.

I will attach a picture.

Thank you,
Frodo

That looks like normal for 147 grainers to me. Loaded 100 today. They alway imprint the bearing surface. As long as it passes your plunk test you should be good. Especially if you are using a full length crimp sizing die after seating.

Ok, thx Jim.

I am using a full length sizing die, but a some rounds are not passing the plunk test.

I think I need to possibly adjust my sizing die, but I have not had to do that much since I set it up a whil eback.

What is your COL? Plunk test can fail for several reasons, one being the Spin portion. I always look for it to spin or turn freely once in the barrel to make sure its free of the lands. Also how high is the round above the barrel shrouds? Should be flush or better.

As to the adjustment of the FCD, you would have to be pretty seriously out of adjustment I think for that not to be effective. Did you adjust it for crimp with the new setup?

You bring up several good points and I will look at each.

The COL is 1.10 recipe calls for. Most cartridges spin free and it is only a few that stick. I will have to see why and if it is b/c the COL on those is too long and hitting the lands.

Also, I will have to go back through the setup on the FCD. I should have spent more time on it. We recently moved and unpacked and I did a quick check on each station, wanting to get it back up and running, you know.

Had to to get my range fix and poke some holes in targets.

Got that now, so I will dial everything in where it needs to be.

Thx, Frodo

Also I might add you could check to see where that bullet unfouls. My Missouri Bullet Company 147 grain Flat Point unfouls at 1.132 so seating them becomes tight. Only .015 or so from lands at 1.120 approx. Easily a land grabber if you don't seat consistently.

Jim - Thx for the help with all this and I've gathered a lot of valuable info about both my 9mm Pistols and the MAX Col. Please see the info below.

Springfield 3.8 XDM-C 9mm - Berries Copper Plate 147 -> 1.2050 MAX COL
S&W M&P Shield 9mm - Berries Copper Plate 147 -> 1.2315 MAX COL

The Ogee on the Berries Copper Plate 147 is typical.

Also, the tolerance in the chamber of each has its own characteristics and for my pistols, the M&P Shield is more tolerant of minor case bulge than the XDM-C.

I am setting up my FCD to take the bulge out. The new reloads I am doing is a 147gr Berries with 3.4gr of Titegroup.

Once the bulge issue is resolved, I may push the COL to 1.15 (.05 under MAX COL) to see if the groups and accuracy tighten up some.

So, far this load is really soft shooting and as accurate as any factory I have shot accurate.

Thx again, Frodo

Just a followup - Either the FCD was never setup correctly, or it did not matter as much with the 115 gr bullets. It was way adjustment. In any event I used the standard setup and that fixed the issue. I only reload 9mm and usually stay with a particular load for while, so this has been a great learning experience. Thx again - Frodo
